Music Theory for Beginners:
(and intermediate players who have avoided theory until now)
Music is made up of notes. Each time you pluck a string, either fretted or open (un fretted) you are playing a note.
When you play a chord, you are playing up to 6 notes at a time.
A note is a sound; sound is vibration, we measure the speed (or frequency) at which a string vibrates in Hertz (or Hz),
which means cycles/vibrations per second.
A musical note is a sound that is vibrating at a certain pitch or frequency; the higher the frequency (or pitch), the higher the note.
When the frequency of a note is doubled, the resulting note is an Octave higher in pitch and it will sound higher, but (sort of) the same.
If you half the frequency of a note, it will be an octave lower – it will still be the same note, but lower in pitch.
